HOW MANY COATS OF STAIN SHOULD YOU USE?

It may seem like you will get better coverage staining your wood deck or log cabin if you apply additional coats of stain. However, more stain is not always better, and can actually result in peeling stain, less protection and a shorter life span for your project. How many coats of stain should you use? Learn more about the proper way to apply stain and the best number of coats below.

Rules of Staining Wood

The general rule of thumb is to only apply as much stain as the wood of your deck or log home can absorb. But how do you know how much is too much? Read on to learn more about the rules of staining wood, and why more is not always better.

Rule #1: Do not over-stain wood

While it may seem like more is better, staining wood more times than necessary will cause more problems. When in doubt, do not apply more than two layers of stain to a wood deck or log home.

Rule # 2: Apply “wet on wet”

First, always read the instructions on your stain or product. However, the best way to apply stain is usually “wet on wet.” This means if you are going to apply two layers of stain, apply the second layer soon after applying the first layer. This allows the stain to fully permeate the wood without drying and creating a shield between the first and second layer of stain.

Rule #3: Only add a second layer of stain if you need it

If the first layer of stain looks perfect, then great! You do not need to add a second layer. You should reserve adding a second layer only if you want a darker color for the stain. However, many times, the first layer of stain will suffice for both adequate protection and the desired color.

Rule #4: Take the type of wood into account

Some woods may not be able to handle even a second coat of wood stain. If you are staining a hardwood, it may only be able to absorb one coat of stain.
